Richard's Alibi
When Richard Blaney was practicing more complicated magic tricks, he went to the park at night. He had forgotten who had shown it to him, but it was a small park outside the city.
One night, there was someone there before him, a rare occurrence.
It was a beautiful girl.
It looked like she was crying.
Very shy and lacking the courage to talk to her, he lost his nerve to even start practicing, because he was thinking so much about her. So, that day, he left her alone and went back home.
The next day, she was there again-and again, she was crying.
He heard rumors about her.
They said that the girl's mother was a prostitute, and she couldn't go home while her mother had a customer.
Richard thought he wanted to do something to cheer up this girl, who was always crying.
Richard showed the girl his magic tricks. Of course, he was too embarrassed to show his face, so he was always dressed up like a clown.
Of course, the girl was surprised at first by the sudden visitor with such a strange appearance, but before she knew it she was drawn to his magic tricks, and moved to shock and laughter.
From that night on, Richard, in his clown makeup, went to see the girl every day to make her smile.
To make it so she didn't have to cry anymore.
In that deserted park, it was just the two of them--as if the world itself was ending...
Richard Blaney, one the night of Vivian's murder, as well as the night of Brenda's murder, went to see the girl and do his magic tricks for her. But, he could not say so, could not say that it was a part-time job. He couldn't trust the police anymore. He couldn't allow them to bust in on the poor girl to confirm what his job was, couldn't let them tell her that the "clown magician" was really a sadistic killer.
The girl didn't know the "clown magician"'s name, or recognize his face out of makeup. There was no need to bring that girl "despair" through such an irresponsible act. Richard knew he was innocent. As long as he still lived, he could surely prove it; and then, someday, he'd be able to become the "clown magician" once more, and see her again.
He believed in that.
