Character Sketches
Richard Blaney (age 21)
Arrested as the perpetrator of the Black Maria Incident. While working as a newspaper delivery boy, he was studying to become a professional magician. Delivered newspapers to Vivian and Harry's residence. He often volunteered at nursing homes and children's hospitals performing magic tricks. A very shy person, he always wore clown makeup whenever he performed in public. Though he is portrayed with the image of a twisted killer, those who know him insist that he is a gentle, kind person.
Harry Powell (age 36)
The first person to witness the Black Maria crime scene, and Vivian's next door neighbor.
An attorney with the State of California, he had been away for a month on an extended business trip. After his return, he discovered Vivian's body. He became good friends with Richard in the time he was delivering newspapers, as well as through seeing him every morning on his jogging route. Knowing Richard's gentle nature and believing in his innocence, he stepped forward as Richard's defense attorney following his arrest.
Vivian Promnight (age 21)
The victim of the Black Maria Incident.
Wished to become an actress. A beautiful woman who, due to several instances of miscommunication, had many enemies. Lived a life of mischief, full of high-risk behaviors and sexual relationships with several different men. As a result, she was fickle with the opposite sex, and many men resented her. During the investigation of her death, it was discovered that she had several male associates, and by this it proved difficult to narrow down possible suspects. She had also had a relationship with a major Hollywood actor through her involvement in a prostitution ring, became pregnant, and underwent an abortion. Her alias in the realm of prostitution was “Cherry”.
Hank Wild, LA Police Inspector (age 50)
Arrested Richard as the perpetrator of the Black Maria Incident.
Called “Mr. JUSTICE” due to his track record of solving violent crimes, he held a small amount of influence as a minor celebrity in the LA Police Department. However, soon after there were questions raised about his investigative methods, mainly in regard to falsifying evidence. Was known to say “Q.E.D.” when closing cases. An imposing presence at 90 kg, hot-blooded and easily angered (“Fire”). A man who moved up in the ranks as a veteran who wins cases through his own sense of justice rather than theory. Perhaps due to his zeal to arrest violent offenders or by it being a year since being on the force at the time of the incident, he lost influence in the department after his missteps in the Elisa Cell case.
Mike Quiet, FBI Special Investigator (age 31)
An elite investigator and Harvard graduate.
At present, he is known for pinpointing the murderer's identity in the Elisa Cell case without a single error in his criminal profile. To the citizens of LA, who knew nothing of profiling at the time, Mike made a huge splash as an incredibly intelligent investigator. The type to avoid current affairs and draw his own conclusions through theory. A cool-headed, inquisitive type, and the complete opposite in personality to Hank, he was called “Ice” in the mass media as they laughed at the feud between the two of them (“Fire vs. Ice”). Following the closing of the Black Maria case, he was killed in an unfortunate, sudden accident.
Edmond Carrie (age 21)
The murderer of Elisa Cell and Aisha Inning.
Stated his reason for becoming a murderer as “If I don't offer a sacrifice, Satan will kill me”. There is nothing connecting him to the Black Maria Incident, for several reasons including his type A blood. With his arrest, Ice was declared the winner in the first round of the Fire vs. Ice feud.
Brenda Valentine (age 23)
Vivian Promnight's friend. Remembered Vivian's concern regarding the paper delivery boy, that his broken heart had turned into contempt toward her—and reported the information to Hank. Immediately following her testimony, she was murdered, leading to Richard's immediate arrest.
Mr. & Mrs. Alexander
Attacked by “a man with short blond hair, about 185 cm tall” on March 7, 1970. The same message that had appeared at the scene of the Black Maria murder (“Hurry and catch me...I cannot control myself”) was written on the wall at the scene in black lipstick. Mrs. Alexander, perhaps from the shock of her attack, fell into a comatose state. Mr. Alexander sustained a serious stabbing injury to the side, running into the perpetrator as he was fleeing the scene. The knife the man dropped at the scene was found to contain Vivian's DNA.
Quincy E. Danes (Private Investigator, age 64)
Compiling the elements of the story. Originally an agent with the FBI Department of Behavioral Science. Following his retirement, he now works as a private investigator. Chosen to interview and profile the twisted killer behind the Black Maria for the FBI. Just 8 years old when the incident occurred, he began thinking about why the killer felt he had to kill the victim the way he had, and why he felt she had to die; spreading his wings as an investigator even as a young child. Falling into the “mystery of the Black Maria” with his first interview with Richard in 1972, even now he has yet to find the answer.
Note: The ages in parenthesis, with the exception of Quincy Danes, refer to ages at the time of the incident. (Quincy's age is listed as of the present day—August 26, 2009.)
