1) 'nameru' can be translated as 'to experience' (as in a hardship), but also as 'to lick or taste' and 'to treat lightly or with disrespect' all of which fit the stanza, leaving it up to interpretation
2) where he sings 'ai' (love) is the kanji for 'kasa' (umbrella), hence the translation
